-
2025
Receiving obligation: all domestic B2B companies must be able to receive e-invoices.
-
2027
Sending obligation stage 1: companies from 800,000 euro annual turnover must issue e-invoices.
-
2028
Sending obligation stage 2: all remaining companies. Demand rises accordingly.
What is Peppol?
Peppol is a standardized European network over which companies exchange electronic invoices and other business documents securely and in a structured way.
-
A route, not a format.
Peppol is the transport route. Structured e-invoices travel over it from sender to receiver, regardless of the software each side uses.
-
Access Points connect.
Certified Access Points bring participants into the network. In the four-corner model, sender and receiver each talk only to their own Access Point.
-
The Peppol ID addresses.
Every participant has a unique Peppol ID. Delivery happens over it, like a postal address for electronic invoices.
Peppol, XRechnung and ZUGFeRD, how do they relate?
A common mix-up. Peppol is the route, the network over which the invoice is transported. XRechnung and ZUGFeRD are formats, the content of the invoice. Over Peppol the Peppol BIS Billing format is usually transported. XRechnung is the German specialization of the European standard EN 16931, ZUGFeRD and Factur-X are hybrid PDF formats.
